Development of low power non-thermal plasma jet and optimization of operational parameters for treating dyes and emerging contaminants

Abstract Non-thermal plasma has emerged as an effective treatment system against the latest class of highly recalcitrant and toxic environmental pollutants termed emerging contaminants (ECs). In present work, a detailed experimental study is carried out to evaluate efficacy non-thermal jet with two dyes, Rd. B Met. Blue, model contaminants. The provided complete dye decoloration in 30 min applied voltage 6.5 kV p?p . ·OH, having highest oxidation potential, acts main reactive species, which direct action on also indirectly by getting converted into H 2 O 3 Further, effect critical operational parameters viz, sample pH, (4.5?6.5 ), conductivity (5?20 mS cm ?1 distance was examined. Out all assessed parameters, found be most significant operating parameters. A high low favored decoloration, while pH not that significant. To understand influence discharge gas efficacy, experiments are conducted argon helium gases under fixed geometrical configuration. Both similar efficiency. DBD removal rendered maximum mineralization 73% for B, 60% Blue. Finally, system’s efficiency actual ECs (four pharmaceutical compounds, metformin, atenolol, acetaminophen, ranitidine) microbial contaminant ( E. coli ) tested. showed effectivity targeted pharmaceuticals log2.5 reduction. systematic characterization degradation could interest large communities working towards commercializing systems.
